Verarmd uranium.
Fish test

waaraan tweehonderd mensen konden meedoen. Dat is nu teruggebracht naar
hoogstens tien bewoners en hulpverleners.

Bijlmer is a suburb of Amsterdam where Israeli transport jet crashed
in
1992. Some of the plane's depleted uranium (DU) counterweights burned
in the
crash fire.
The Dutch government covered up possible adverse health consequences
by not
conducting a study of people affected. The government also massaged
the
conclusions of a scientific report it commissioned on DU combustability
and
risk following the crash.
Professor Hooper is a world authority on the effects of DU and other
substances on health. FISH test alone is not an indicator. I understand
it
must be combined with a test for presence of DU in the body.
Note the difficulty with defining a control group. Is it a made up
problem,
or is pollution so widespread in everyday life that it would mask
effects
like those from DU?

Medical examination among a small group of victims of the Bijlmer
disaster
03 April, 2002
Amsterdam (ANP) - Ten firemen and ten residents of the Bijlmer
are
examined on the exposure of depleted uranium during the Bijlmer
disaster
in October 1992. With the help of the so-called FISH test one
can track
damage on the DNA material.
Minister of Health, Mrs Borst, writes this in a letter to the
Dutch
parliament.
The coaching commission of the Medical Examination Plane Crash
Bijlmermeer (MOVB) pleaded for suchlike examination in
the hope of
dispelling most of the unrest among the victims of the Bijlmer
disaster.
Borst, however, wants to restrict the examination to twenty people,
because
according to her a large-scale approach doesn't take away the
turmoil. The
sound boarding groups of residents, rescuers, social workers
and co-
workers of the KLM were not univocal about this.
highest risk
The twenty firemen and residents belong to those who have run
the highest
risk. When it appears (from the examination) that there is really
something
wrong, Borst will possibly extend the examination.
Earlier the minister already abandoned an epidemiological examination
on
the consequences of the Bijlmer disaster for the health of the
residents. It
appeared to be impossible to find a representative control group.
In
contrast it appeared to be succesful for the rescuers and social
workers. For the
residents only individual medical tests were available.

comments of Dr Malcolm Hooper on the FISH test:
I have corresponded with Professor Patricia.Virsik-Peuckert on
the
measurement and meaning of chromosome tests. She has already
found
characteristic breakage patterns in one Gulf War Veteran but
indicates
that other exposures can complicate the reading of the test results.
WITHOUT THE SPECIFIC DU TEST THEN ANY CHROMOSOMAL
DAMAGE COULD BE ATTRIBUTED TO OTHER POSSIBLE EXPOSURES
SUCH AS PESTICIDES, HERBICIDES, RADIO- DIAGNOSTICS, OR
UNDERLYING DISEASE (LEUKAEMIA)
In order to get some good expert questions you must speak with
her.
She is very much on our side.
Chromosome tests require blood to be taken and cells separated-
usually white blood cells. Yes they will be looking for specific
chromosomal damage but other exposures than radiation must be
ruled
out in interpreting the data. As far as I know no chromosome
breakages
are uniquely characteristic of radiation exposure from alpha
particles. I think you are right in thinking that the authorities
will want to use the test to avoid any conclusion that indicates
DU is
the source of any damage found.
Epidemiological results are often used to delay clinical examination
of patients. This was certainly the ploy used in the UK. 10 years
after the war there has been no systematic clinical study of
UK
veterans just epidemiology that shows they suffer from 2-3 times
the
level of symptoms found in control groups.
